mShell web activation
Note
Since version 2.02 the activation is not needed anymore. If version 2.02 or higher is installed this service is not needed.
Up until version 2.01
mShell had to be
activated with a valid serial number. Upon first start of
mShell a dialog to enter the serial number is presented. The serial number is then sent via SMS to a Swiss GSM mobile phone number and the activation server sends the individual activation key back by SMS.
Activation via SMS is by far the quickest and most convenient way to activate
mShell and should be considered when ever possible.
Nevertheless, in some cases it is not possible to use the SMS based activation (no roaming to Switzerland, inactive or no SIM card, etc.) and therefore an alternative activation method is presented here.
How it works:
- Install mShell (v2.01) on the mobile phone.
- If the SMS activation fails or if it is canceled a message with important information (such as IMEI and exact version and build number) to fill out the form below is displayed. Keep this message open, it helps you in the next step.
- Fill out and submit the form below.
- A .sis file is mailed to the designated e-mail address. The sis file has a name like Activation-375274619676.sis and is only of a few hundred bytes in size.
- Install this .sis file on the phone where mShell is awaiting activation.
- If you start mShell next time you will find it activated. Check whether gsm.number has the same phone number as the SIM card currently in the phone.
Important to note:
- Web activation works only for mShell version 2.01 (released August 2007).
- When using mShell under Developer Certificate web activation can not be used!
- An mShell activation is no longer bound to a specific SIM card, it's bound to the specific phone. This is the reason why mShell keeps activated when you change the SIM card. Moreover, it can even used without SIM card or in flight mode. Consequently, the validity of constant gsm.number can no longer be guaranteed by technical design. Keep that in mind when you rely on gsm.number for instance to avoid SMS-loops.
Therefore, run the mShell activation again whenever you insert a new SIM card!
